Box Elder is an independent film, written and directed by Todd Sklar. The film was shot on location with a small crew in Columbia, Missouri on a shoestring budget of around $70,000. Immediately after wrapping post-production, the film premiered at the Ragtag Cinema, where it screened to near sold out crowds for the entire month of March and it still plays Ragtag on the first Saturday of every month.
Shortly after its premiere, the film was successfully self-distributed in over 30 markets, focusing primarily on college towns, and selling just shy of 10,000 tickets while playing to packed audiences across the country. Todd and a handful of his cast and crew documented this process while also supporting the self-distribution tour with intensive grass roots marketing and heavily integrated campus events.
The initial tour went so well that Todd and some of his pals founded a small niche-oriented distribution company. As a result, the boys are heading back on the road this fall, bringing the film to even more art-houses while sleeping on your couches and drinking all of your beers. This is a good indication as to what you should expect when they make their way to your city.
Plus they're bringing some of their friends along for the ride. Friends with films you need to watch. Box Elder will be joined by On the Road with Judas and Registered Sex Offender when they hit the road this fall.
